Israel Wiped Off The Map!

No, this is not one of Hizbollah’s screamy, if baseless, threats, nor one of Mahmoud Ahmadinnerjacket’s wetter dreams, but is, in fact, the result of what happens when some airlines go out of business, and others are wobbling along on very little money:

From the AP:

“Irate Israeli passengers have complained to British BMI airline that the Jewish state was wiped off the inflight map which showed flights bound for Israel were instead heading to Mecca.

“But the airline denied any anti-Israel agenda and insisted there was a simple explanation: the planes were recently bought from a bankrupt charter company that flew mainly to Muslim countries.”

Sadly, that explanation is not stopping Israeli authorities from getting their kosher kecks in a twist! Transport ministry director-general Gideon Sitterman told Israeli army radio: “Doing business with Israel has its advantages and disadvantages, but we will not agree to a situation where they hide the existence of Israel but want to do business with Israel”. 

“Hide the existence of Israel”?! Umm, how would one do that, exactly? And the allegation simply isn’t true. While the airline’s in-flight moving maps marked Islamic holy sites, they did display the city of Haifa in Israel, identified by its Arabic name, Khefa. 

BMI has responded to the allegations by saying: ”If BMI had any political agenda in order not to anger neighbouring countries, it would not have invested so much in the Tel Aviv line”.

BMI has withdrawn the two offending planes from service while new map programs are installed, but said larger planes had been scheduled to take over the route last Sunday anyway.
