The vast majority of police officers in the United States are honorable men and women dedicating–and sometimes risking–their lives to protect and serve the public. Then there are also some dicks in blue–the type for whom their badge serves as passport for an ego trip.
I would consider Sgt. Raul Ramirez of El Paso, TX one of the latter, after watching this video footage of a little incident yesterday. A 19-year-veteran of the force, Sgt. Ramirez lost his temper with a news crew from KVIA ABC-7, who were interviewing people at the scene of a traffic accident. Ramirez not only arrested the two men without any rational basis for criminal charges, but also got unnecessarily physically aggressive while doing so. The cameraman luckily kept recording the scene, until Sgt. Ramirez knocked the camera out of his hands. Explosive video after the jump:
Sgt. Ramirez has been placed on desk duty while EPPD Internal Affairs investigates the incident, though it’s already pretty clear how that’s going to go. The local police chief has called the video footage “disturbing,” and says Ramirez’s behavior “seemed a little out of control.” He also said the justification for the arrest of the news crew “didn’t seem to be legitimate.” The two men from KVIA were released from custody within an hour of their arrest.
