Vatican Deems Creationists Ignorant, Boring

A Vatican-sponsored conference on evolution is pissing off people who don’t believe in evolution. Proponents of creationism and its bastard stepchild “intelligent design” are whining that the Catholics didn’t invite them to the five-day Darwin party currently underway in Rome.

One of those idiots from the Discovery Institute, the well-funded spearhead of the inteligence design campaign, is publicly complaining that his people weren’t invited to present their non-scientific views at the evolution conference because the event was financially underwritten by John Templeton Foundation, a major U.S. nonprofit that has criticized ID.

But Vatican officials have weighed in on the controversy with a very polite: “Um, no, we just think you’re stupid.”

Organizers of the five-day conference at the Pontifical Gregorian University told the AP Thursday that they barred intelligent design proponents because they wanted an intellectually rigorous conference on science, theology and philosophy to mark the 150th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s “The Origin of Species.”

While there are some Darwinian dissenters present, intelligent design didn’t fit the bill, they said.

“We think that it’s not a scientific perspective, nor a theological or philosophical one,” said the Rev. Marc Leclerc, the conference director and a professor of philosophy of nature at the Gregorian. “This makes a dialogue very difficult, maybe impossible.”

In addition to intelligent design, creationism has been openly criticized at the conference. In his opening address, Cardinal William Levada, head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, spoke dismissively of American Christians who want biblical creationism taught in public schools in addition to, or instead of, evolution.

A representative of the Turkish creationist I told you about the other day had the microphone taken away during a question-and-answer session.

Organizers said he hadn’t formulated a question and was just stating his point of view, which apparently followed the line of reasoning established by his leader Adnan Oktar that the lack of “transitional” fossils proves that natural selection has not occurred.

The participant called the conference undemocratic, and Oktar later released a statement: “Although there are discussion parts, they want this discussion to be one-sided.”

I’d imagine that astronomers wouldn’t want their conferences stormed by astrologers yammering about how scientific study of the stars can’t instruct humankind in the reading of personality charts. I doubt a medical conference on diabetes would invite a presenter to discuss the healing prospects of leech therapy.

Like our physical properties, our intellectual understanding goes through a process of evolution over time. With that in mind, I can consider it entirely possible that creationists don’t believe in evolution because it simply hasn’t touched their regressive strain of mammal yet.

If nine-year-old Susie Smartypants can fully grasp the concept, fully formed adult humans should possess the critical thinking skills sufficient to overcome such ignorance.
