The short answer to that question is–I’m not really certain. You all know Prudence and I don’t bother ourselves with silly things like cultivating “sources,” or making phonecalls to officially verify stuff we’ve heard.
We’re just generous–and lazy–by nature, simply endeavoring to share with our loyal readers the juiciest tidbits of gossip we hear during our DC adventures.
Now about that poor Suskind….
I’ve heard that FBI investigators have paid official visits to former US government officials inquiring about their suspected cooperation with Suskind’s research. They were reportedly concerned about the publication of what was supposed to be highly classified information. And just to be clear–I’m not necessarily referring to Rob Richer.
Suskind rankled the Bush Administration with his latest release, The Way of the World, which asserted that the White House comissioned a forged letter written to tie al Qaeda’s lead 9/11 hijacker, Mohammad Atta, to Saddam Hussein’s chief of intelligence, Tahir Jalil Habbush al-Tikriti.
The White House, CIA, George Tenet, and Richer–former associate deputy director of operations at the CIA–all called bullshit on the claim, prompting Suskind to post the transcript of his interview with Richer.
Yadayadayada whatever. That’s the kind of thing you might expect to prompt an investigation. But the inquiry to which I refer concerned Suskind’s previous release, the One Percent Doctrine.
That’s right. This past summer, a full two years after its release and shortly before The Way of the World hit the market, FBI investigators were making the rounds in DC to question those suspected of talking a little too freely to Suskind.
Why exactly would that be?
I’m well aware of the sclerotic pace of our national security bureaucracy, but did it really take them two years to notice the One Percent Doctrine leaked some valuable dirt?
Or had they been alerted to the Suskind shitstorm looming on the Fall bookshelf horizon?
There’s no better way to force a chill over an author or journalist’s research than by having a couple of buzz-cutted and poorly-dressed federal criminal investigators spreading the word that national security leaks would be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
With the whole election fury going on outside, I’m guessing not many readers will be concerned about one little FBI investigation into a Pulitzer-prize winning journalist’s best-seller of a book. But for the two-dozen national security geeks who actually care about this stuff, check back tomorrow and I’ll drop the name of the high-powered figure FBI investigators were informed was most likely the leaky source they were seeking.
Oooohh the suspense…….
